- "Benwell Towers was the Bishop's Palace for the Bishop of Newcastle. Later uses of the building include a fire station"

Alastair Gleason
- This was the HQ of the MINES DURHAM AND NORTHERN (N & C) DIVISIONS FIRE & RESCUE BRIGADE, later NORTHUMBERLAND & DURHAM FIRE & RESCUE BRIGADE, finally named the NCB Mines Rescue Service.
- It was an operational Central Rescue Station as well as the area HQ.
- The station was open by 1950, and closed in either 1976 or 1977.
- It was the HQ for the other NCB Mines Rescue Stations at Ashington, Houghton and Crook Stations. The service in Northumberland and Durham provided local fire cover until the formation of the County Fire Brigades after WW2. In the case of Crook, the County Council continued to use the NCB Fire and Rescue service as the local area Fire cover until 1956.

Shown on 1951/1952 1:1250 OS map as NCB Fire & Rescue Brigade HQ
